Hi all, hope you are all coping right now? I am not well. I knew I was going downhill on Monday night as I was so restless in bed, couldn't get comfy. So yesterday I woke up to a beautiful day & carried a huge basket of washing outside. I felt awful, as weak as a kitten & like an elephant was sitting on my chest. Got worse as the day went on. So I'm on my emergency steroids & anti-bios as well as four hourly nebs. Thinking of you all.

Hi Wheezyrie,

So sorry to hear you've come down with something just as the weather is beginning to improve.  Will you be going to the doctor as well as taking the emergency prescription?  Although I've got an emergency supply, I've not used them with out the doctor telling me  so I don't know what the situation is with them.  At least catching it quickly means you won't be feeling so ill for so long.

Best wishes,

Hi, I have made a Drs appt but I have started the meds anyway. My Dr didn't really tell me what to do but I recognised the signs of a chest infection & I wanted to nip this in the bud before it gets worse. Have a nice day & thanks for replying.

Hi Lorien,

I was like that at the beginning, but now that I can recognise the beginning of an infection (paint chart!!), I start taking the course of anti-bios and, when I am almost at the end, I visit GP for a check that it is clearing and to get a replacement dose.

As I was never happy about taking steroids, used to wait for GP to tell me to take them, i.e. when I went for check up.

The system has obviously worked for me as a) am still here and b) GP is still more than happy to let me have my back up supplies, although when I visit him in May for my 6 monthly "am I still alive and kicking" review, I will have to ask for replacement steroids as mine have gone out of date (last September!).  That is good news for me as it means that I have not taken any steroids for over 2 years - long may that continue.

Crikey Sue, that is good news!  Going two years without them is amazing - I thought I was lucky that I'd gone through the whole of last year without having any - obviously congratulated myself too often by December, lol, so they gave me a double-dose.

It feels more 'secure' having them in the house - don't know if that's the right word - but then nerve-wracking when I start to feel low, wondering if this is the right time/right symptoms to be taking them.  As you say, I guess I'll get used to it in time.

Crikey, well done with that two years though!

Wish it had been two years since I needed steroids!Sad I was only on them in January! I'm glad I went to the Drs, she said I did the right thing starting my emergency meds but after listening to my chest she upped the steroids to 8 a day instead of 6. She has given me another lot of anti-bios to take alongside the ones I started already & also said to keep up with the four hourly nebs. I walked round to Boots to get my prescription & had an attack. They were very good & attentive. I am home now & resting.

Hi, Wheezyrie sorry to hear things going badly again, have you asked your chemists if they will deliver your prescriptions , quite a few offer this service which is helpful when you are not feeling well.

take care

Sorry to hear that you are not feeling well.  Maybe you should go to bed with a hot water bottle.  My hot water bottle covers has the slogan "Tea and Sympathy Please."   It makes me grin when I see the hot water bottle but it seems to have no effect on my family.

Get well soon!

Kind Regards

PS. It wouldn't have any effect on my family either! I had to practically beg the kids to get the washing in!

Hi Wheezy,

Have a system with repeat scripts where I request on line, my chemist collects them from the Docs and I saunter in as and when.  If I was really bad, they would also deliver, but fortunately it hasn't come to that yet.

Hi, Mandy like the hot water bottle cover sign, I use wheaty bags warmed in the microwave because it can be a bit of a job filling hot water bottle and not getting scalded, think there are some gel filled things which are meant as hot water bottle substitutes .

I agree that I feel more secure knowing that they are to hand, but for me, it is easy to know when to take them .... when the old mucus starts turning a lovely shade of light brown ............ sorry if you are having your tea of mushroom soup?  Big Smile  If it is putrid green, then whack down immediately as the infection already has a hold.

Think it is something that you get used to - haven't had an infection in the lungs for ages, so reckon my home grown "knock on the head remedies" are working.  Had a couple of colds (at least I think they were colds, it is so long since I had one without complications), they lasted their course and went away without going near my lungs.

Hi , Wheezyrie when you are so tired everything is an effort , things look worse you just have to hold on and wait for the meds to work. Keep eating, a little at a time works for me when I am so tired eating is an effort and keep your fluid intake up, just water is ok as it takes little effort and helps with dry mouth when breathing is not good.

hold on for better days

Hi, Wheezyrie understand where you are at the moment and it is easy to feel the world has rushed off and left you behind because you cannot keep up, but your friends will always be there because they understand how you feel and the effort needed to keep going.

keep on going

Thank you, I am resting Paula. Hubby is doing the ironing now & looked after my daughter earlier whilst I had a nap. Was going to get my youngest help me with the dinner but she has come home with a huge lump of clay to make a pot for homework! She will be hours working on it! Never mind, food from the freezer I guess tonight! Take care.

Hi again, I have been investigating getting my prescriptions delivered. I get mine in Boots on their keep & repeat service which can be abit hit & miss. Anyway on their website you can arrange to have your repeat meds delievered to your door for £2.90. I guess its a small price to pay if you are too poorly to get out or cant get anyone else to pick them up. ITs a shame that my next lot will be in Boots tomorrow so I will have to get them picked up but I think I will ask about the delivery service.Wink

Dave, the chemists are all in town practically in a row. I just use Boots as they dont shut the pharmacy for lunch which the others so & you can guarantee if the kids or I need a prescription it will be lunch time!

Wheezy:
What are your home made remedies?

Hi Wheezy,

Sorry you have been feeling so rubbish and hope that the light at the tunnel is coming slowly towards you.

My remedies for avoiding infections work for me as I live on my own and have no responsibility for anyone else at all;  they make not work for others for a variety of reasons.

If I feel a sore throat coming on, I immediately start gargling with salt water;  if I feel that infection is creeping up on me (I have got to know the signs well after all these years), then I do not go out, I rest and sleep and read and chill and may even not get dressed.  Have been known not to get dressed for 3 days - saves on the clothes and washing!

I also eat very simple food so that my body can spent most of its energy on fighting the infection and not digesting heavy meals.  Home made chicken soup is a favourite and is known as the Jewish antibiotic soup!  If I am running out of food, I order a delivery over the internet, so that a) I do not have to go out and b) I do not have to mix with the great unwashed in supermarkets Wink.  The other thing that I avoid is sugar - apparently bacteria like to feed on sugar or sweet things.  I also drink lots of fluid - mainly water or herbal teas.

I follow an Ayurvedic diet with a couple of naughty exceptions (Embarrassed!) and, as part of that, when I am into infection or potential infection territory, I heat up my system by drinking boiled turmeric and ginger 3 times a day.  Not the most pleasant of drinks and not a match for a gin and tonic, but it seems to work for me.  I may also take some homeopathic remedy, but that is usually on the advice of my Greek Doc, with whom I am in regular contact.

Finally, I also have my salt pipe, which I bought last year.  Not sure how much good it is doing me, but I throw that into the mix as well.

Whatever I am doing, it appears to be working for me as I have not had an infection since my haemophilus bout in 2009 - hope I have not spoken too soon!!!Smile

Guess it really it a question of finding out which bits work for each of us and if you have family responsibilities, how easy is it to walk away and say - sort yourselves out while I take a couple of days rest?

Wheezy......can I also add to Sue's list of things which work for her is her great positivity.....that is, she never lets anything get her down ....she can always find something to laugh about........even when she is feeling absolutely rotten.......she can also switch off her own problems when she knows some one else is in trouble......and step in and help in the most amazing ways.......

We live at the complete opposite  ends of England.......I wish she lived around the corner........

I know she will be embarrassed with the above words........but its true..... she is a real 'half glass full' person....whatever is in her glass ........

cheers margaret Wink

So very true Embarrassed Embarrassed Embarrassed

Thank you Margaret, but you are right I am an optimist or half glass full person.  Think we both have the same approach to life - it is too short to stuff a mushroom as Shirley Conran once said, so lets get on and enjoy what we have.  Also think that the sense of humour helps tremendously - saw a card once which said "if you can laugh at yourself, you will never lack for amusement".

So do I, but have a feeling that we would never ever get anything done ......... but then, would that matter that much anyway!

So thank you Margaret.

Well folks, big Nellie has shifted off my chest but has left her baby behind! So I'm staying on the dreaded pred (steroids) for another week. Hopefully this will shift it & I can feel well again! A good nights sleep would be nice but various side affects of all the meds I am on wont let that happen.Sad Am supposed to be going to see friends at the weekend for a couple of nights. I was so looking forward to it but now its losing its appeal. Ok moan over, sorry but need to clear my head! It helps so much having this place to do this. Thanks for reading.

Hi, Wheezyrie steps back wards so that you can move forward can get you down but if you were not well enough to enjoy your trip away, that can feel a waste of effort in getting there and not being able to do anything.

Taking the trip when things are going better and you can cope with it, should make it more enjoyable when you can do it.

hoping for better times for you

Hi Glynis, welcome to the site. I am sorry you have severe asthma too. What meds are you on currently? I finish my latest two week course of pred tomorrow but I am still struggling. Nearly ended up in hosp yesterday after a bad attack but after three nebs it settled a little. We were away from home & I didn't want to end up in a hosp miles away. Anyway take care & speak soon. Thinking of you.
